Subject: No Greater Friend

Two men, one young and one old
Stand together gazing up at the Milky Way
The young man listening to the story told
By the old man of such a long ago day

In the cemetary they stand by a soldier’s grave
In Vietnam the soldier’s life came to an end
He died with honors, for he was very brave
And to the old man there was no better friend

They fought side by side in that controversial war
Seeing many men groan and cry as they died
Many didn’t understand what they were fighting for
And over the deaths of their buddies, the soldiers cried

Not even a cathedral could provide sanctuary
The day they were captured by the opposing side
Forced to march in a lineup, they were tired and weary
Knowing that before daybreak they would all have died

The old man looked at the young man, a tear in his eye
“That night we planned to escape”, he said
“We knew we probably wouldn’t make it, but we had to try
For either way, we knew with certainty that we were dead”

The men overpowered a guard, and took his gun
But the other guards soon discovered they were gone
Hearing the guards behind them, through the night they run
Until they know that only one of them had the chance to go on

The old man’s friend turned to him, said “Leave it in my hands”
“Give me the gun, and I will hold they back for you.”
“I was desperate”, the old man said, “Please try to understand”
“I had a young wife in Paris, and was expecting a baby too.”

With a final handshake, the men said good-bye
The old man’s friend gave him his name tag, told him to flee
Now the old man stands here with his grandson beneath the night sky
And his voice trembles as he says “My friend gave his life for me.”

He pulls out the nametag and shows it to the young man
Amazingly he still had it when his arduous trip came to an end
“That’s what’s mysterious”, he said “I still had it in my hand”
“I shall never dispose of it, this reminder of my truest friend”
