While the plans for Night on Bald Mountain began in 1866, the orchestral writing began June 12, 1867, and were completed on June 23, 1867. Although it went through many revisions by Musorsgky, it was Rimsky-Korsakov who performed the orchestral adaptions which involved a reworking of the material from the second choral version. In spite of all of the hard work and the respect that this piece receives today, it was 101 years after the original was completed that it received its first publication.
