When an arrow struck at her flank and sank in, she jerked up and gave a loud shriek, a scream which sounded over the meadow more like that cry of a child than anything else. She struggled to heave herself up and turned her head try and nip the arrow shaft to try and draw it out. It was out of her reach.

Her ears flicked back at the pain that was so alien to her. Determined, she took a few steps to cross the small stream so she could leave but the minute her hooves touched the sandy bottom of it, the leg which was already bad now with an arrow in it, gave out from beneath her. She whinnied before getting a moutful of water.

It was the shock of the cold that drew her into a more wakeful setting the pain aside. She practically jumped out of the stream to the other side landing in a heap where she lay panting. Eyes closed as she thought of only why.
