Well, my own interpretation was that the Cartoonist, to the very end, was incompetent, and therefore managed to screw up the last word he ever spoke. But Robert realizes that this was done deliberately, for the purpose of thematic resolution. His empathy with the Cartoonist wasn't good for much after the Cartoonist stopped being the same as the author, but it was good for this last observation.
