It wasn't until relatively late in the strip that I actually read anything by him. The first Borges references in the strip were based entirely on what I'd read _about_ his work.
I think the main direct effect when I did read his stories was that, having seen where he'd taken things, I wanted to pick a direction that he hadn't already used.

Of course, his indirect influence on other authors is hard to measure; in all probability, T&R would have been much different if literature hadn't had Borges.
