Actually, the goal is to *unify* the known forces into aspects of a single force. So far they've been able to show how EM and the two nuclear forces are related, but unable to work gravity into it. One idea a couple of people have tried is adding a fifth force to tie gravity in with the others, but the idea is not that there has to be a fifth force, but rather that they want there to be only one.

And, okay, I can see how gravity<->earth and em<->fire work, but what do the two nuclear forces have to do with water and air? I don't see the connection.
