Where The Primitive Spirit Dwells

Often when the work day is done
and I ride the 7:30 train out past the gleaming towers
toward my suburban cave,

I clutch my brief case
to my tie draped chest
and cry.

Deep down inside
the fires still burn
where a primitive spirit dwells.

It breaks out in my dreams
seeking clean air and wild places.
the feel of earth under naked feet.

In this modern world
Where we live on asphalt
under smog filled skies

one seldom hears the wild call
Just some coyotes howl
answering the city's roar.

Sometimes Late at night
I want to climb to the highest point
of this concrete world,

And howl
at nature , god
and smog filled sky.

Deep in this battered shell
the fires still burn
Where a primitive spirit dwells
