Didn't the Gaels have a couple of big wins earlier this season? Maybe that's why they were favored. How many Poly fans were in attendance. (The Trib said there were over 1100.) Here's the Sunday story from the Contra Costa Times website.

Slow start hampers Gaels' effort

MORAGA - Coming off a season-low 50 points against UC Irvine last week, St. Mary's men's basketball team again struggled offensively Saturday night, losing 57-52 to Cal Poly.

"We're in a struggle offensively," said St. Mary's coach Randy Bennett. "We're struggling from the line, from the 3, from layups. We gotta get back to work."

The only upside for the Gaels was that their defense somehow was able to keep them in the game. St. Mary's trailed by 13 at halftime, but went on a 12-3 run to begin the second period and make it a contest.

However, down by only three with 45 seconds left, the Gaels' freshman forward Daniel Kickert, who has been hot recently, missed an easy basket. The Mustangs grabbed the rebound to stay in control and guard Jason Allen sunk his two free throws to secure the victory.

"I'm going to be reliving that shot for a couple days," Kickert said after the game. "But hopefully next time we won't be in the position where we have to make that shot."

Allen provided 13 of his 16 points in the final 10 minutes of the game, while Varnie Dennis, who missed Cal Poly's last two games, led all players with 20 points. However, scoring 17 of his points and all seven of his game-high rebounds in the first half, Dennis was held to only three points in the second period before fouling out.

"We made a better effort to defend (Dennis) in the second half," Bennett said, "But you can't let a player score 17 in a half. That made the difference in the game."

With Dennis on the bench, St. Mary's Chase Poole was able to go to work, scoring 10 second-half points to finish with his team-high 16. Kickert scored 12 on the night, shooting 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.

"Give a lot of credit to the inside guys for St. Mary's," said Cal Poly head coach Kevin Bromley. "I thought the kids on both teams played real hard."

The Mustangs controlled the paint early, outrebounding the Gaels 10-5 and outscoring them 8-2 from below the basket in the first 10 minutes, before St. Mary's established an inside presence.

The Gaels will have to come up with an offensive solution soon, as they host Brown on Monday at 7:05 p.m. (Brown beat a weak San Jose State team Saturday night).
