Whewwwww..... Been away for a few days and all this happens!

I agree on a couple things.... that this conference may not be so rosey... and Ellerson's right..., we (Cal Poly) need to wait and see what the college football landscape will be in the future. He spoke to San Jose... but perhaps he's thinking about N. Colorado and the Dakota schools too.... Do we really want to jump into a ship with those far-flung schools? I'd think that those schools would also be insterested in a conference for the rest of their programs (basketball, etc)....! Wouldn't it be logical for them to pursue joining another conference already playing football first? They are sure not getting into the BWC! (I Hope!)

I think SJSU will keep football if/when they loose their D-1A status. Not because it's a money maker..., 'cause it's not apparently, but because football is more than about athletics. I don't have the info on the tip of my tongue (err fingers) but there is a whole dialogue available on the virtues of a university playing football despite the economic realities.

And... irregardless of what statements are being made on message boards..., the reality is that the SJSU administration is the one that will make the final decision. And..., that administration could have made armagadeon type statements in order to positively influence attendance to retain D-1A status.

Sac State.... would be a logical school to play in this conference. But, that would mean they'd need to leave the Big Sky..., and the BSC apparently doesn't allow part-time schools. So, they'd have to join the BWC in all other sports in order to join this possible football conference. I do not know of the climate at Sac State...., but if their overall athletic budget (including travel) for all sports were to decrease appreciably..., then I'd think they'd consider a move.

The recommendation made by the No. Colorado AD/Coach(?) to develop a scheduling agreement may be a logical first step.... and only step for now. I am really unsure of developing a conference office. Couldn't that also be contracted out .... perhaps to the BWC office? I want Cal Poly to have an easy out for this whole thing.

I think an effort to develop a football conference... if/when pusued should be centered around a logical group of western schools. If 6 could be found... great! And then N. Co and the Dakota schools could join as ex-efficio members if they needed or wanted to. I think the 6 CORE schools could be:

Cal Poly
Davis
St Mary's
Sac State
Southern Utah
San Jose

If the 4 of those not currenlty in the BWC were to join the BWC.... that would make a 12 team conference after USU and Idaho leave, right? 12 is not bad.

>Exactly. Programs don't get in financial trouble and
>then drop a division--they get in trouble and then
>drop the sport. Going DI-AA would assure them of
>slightly lower costs and a whole lot less revenue.
>
>I just hope when they drop it the Spartans don't end
>up back in the BW.
