When it comes to academics and recruiting between the two schools my thoughts were that it is easier to get into CSUN than Cal Poly and that might be a factor. All the other things you stated are true. I agree I don't think Cal Poly actually "lost" this recruit to CSUN. I think Cal Poly and many of the other Big West schools listed on the page I linked to backed off of Austin first.
