"North Idaho off to strong start
By Chris Monter
Date: Jan 7, 2003

North Idaho (ID) CC head coach Hugh Watson has a talented team in the competitive Scenic West Athletic Conference. The sixth year head man has the Cardinals off to a 13-3 start (3-1 in the SWAC play). The 1996-97 Cardinals was 33-6 and finished in fourth-place at the NJCAA National Tournament. Watson was voted Coach of theYear in 1997 by the Scenic West Athletic Conference coaches. He has a talented team that is getting look from several Division I schools.

6-6 Tyler Hayes of Bend (OR) High was the leading scorer in the state of Oregon last season. Hayes averaged 24 points and 7 rebounds as a senior with a career high of 40 points and 18 rebounds. Hayes was named All State twice and was named All Conference four times. He played for his father and spent time at point guard in high school. He turned offers from mid-major schools as he was hoping to play at Gonzaga. Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Riverside recruited him last season and UNLV called this week. He was fully qualified out of high school and the Rebels said that they would be willing to take him next year or wait for another season on him. Hayes is averaging 16.7 points per game this season and is leading the team in three-pointers made."

Have we signed him? Is he the real deal? Does he have three years of eligibility left? What happened to Gonzaga?
