A couple of things Poly's students should realize with their behavior:

1. Getting on the Refs does nothing to help their team. If you ride the refs and piss them off (e.g suck my dick), all a sudden phantom calls begin to increase as the refs try to control the behavior in the stands by penalizing them team.

2. Inappropriate behavior can be a momentum killer. For example, when the ref stopped the game last week to toss the fan, that basically gave UCSB and uncalled timeout and distrupted the flow of the game which was beginning to move back into the Mustang's favor. Big Mistake by the fans!

3. If Poly is to eventually build a new basketball venue, attracting paying customers (vs. the students who get in free) is critical. Foul langugage and inapropriate behavior is the fastest way to discourage paying fans from attending. Especially with their children. Spirited, humorous and clever behavior on the other hand is the best way to attract the paying customer. Therefore, the students should think before delivering anything off-color.

If you think this position is crap, no problem. However, take a look at the NBA. According to the Feb. 15th Sports Illustrated, attendance at NBA games over the last 2 years has fallen by 40%. When Sports Illustrated polled fans as to why they weren't attending games, 66% said they no longer supported the NBA due to the behavior of the players and out of control fans. Amazing! Nearly 50% of the NBA's fans have walked as a consequence of behavior. From a business and marketing perspective that kind of loss of market share has to be killer.

Go Stangs! Beat Irvine!
