Subject: Botticelli vs. da Vinci

Congratulations; you have found the next message board assignment! Sorry to be the bearer of the news again; however, the assignment is to compare and contrast the artwork (i.e. style, subjects, colors) of Botticelli and da Vinci.

I believe that there are a couple of differences spawning from similarities between the artwork of the two artists. For one thing, both seem to have religious subjects. While da Vinci takes on a Catholic theme; however, Botticelli seems more fascinated with the gods of Greek and Roman religion/myths.

Another is that important subjects in the artwork seem always to be cloaked in a crimson color. The difference in this is that Botticelli sometimes includes mortals to be important people, while da Vinci only considers the divine to be important enough to be donned with the vibrant color. My backing on this can be seen below with the name of the picture followed by the people who are wearing red in the picture:

Botticelli's "Adoration"--Mary and the entire of the Medici
family
Botticelli's "La Primvera"--Mars and Venus
Botticelli's "Birth of Venus"--Venus
da Vinci's "Madonna of the Rocks"--the angel
da Vinci's "Last Supper"--Jesus Christ
