Subject: Comment on Chartres' unique style

I wish to comment on the uniqueness of the Chartres Cathedral's architecture. The fact that these buildings took such a long span of time to complete tends to influence the architecture of the structure. As time goes on, styles differ, and the style used on the structures also changes. The most obvious of examples is the contrast in the two spires at Chartres. There is no better way to show the contrast of Romanesque and Gothic styles then by showing someone a picture of Chartres' west facade. The plainess of the Romanesque style and the overly adorned Gothic style could not have been displayed any better. This takes me back to the notebook question in class. Any normal spectator of art could see this cathedral and somewhat appreciate the work and adornment put into it, but an educated person would see much more. An educated individual would realize my point of the contrasting styles over time. They would also appreciate every last sculpture on the building a bit more. They would not only see the cute little figures on the walls, but they would understand who these figures represented and why they were on this particular building.
