Subject: "Rigoletto"

"Rigoletto" is one of my least favorite operas sofar. The storyline of it is so unrealistic....not like "The Magic Flute" was the most realistic opera either but the way things were done in the opera just made me not like the opera too much. Starting off the comment with the character Rigoletto.....he just gets me so mad from the start. He knows how to push people's buttons and make them mad and when bad things start happening to him and people make fun of him, he wonders why they do this to him......gee i wonder......and for some reason that just gets me mad. He seeks out revenge of the courtiers and the duke for the abduction of his daughter....which in my personal opinion is all Rigoletto's fault.....but I won't get into that at this moment.......anyway, the plan of revenge goes all wrong just beacuse of some girl named Maddalena, who falls madly in love with the duke even though she knows all about his reputation and she knows he will probably ditch her as soon as he gets what he wants and finds some other girl, messes everything up. Maddalena and her brother Sparafucile have this discussion of the sparing of the duke. Maddalena and her brother come up with the agreement that with the next person who comes into the inn that that will be the person they will kill instsead. And what do you know....its Gilda. I would understand if she walked in there for some sort of purpose or something....but she knew the agreement between Maddalena and her brother...she knew Maddalena "loved" him and she walked in there because she didn't want the "one and only love of her life" to die even though she knew the kind of person he was. That confuses me. I don't get it. I have no clue what kind of girl would do something like that. You don't fall in love in one day....you don't still "love" a guy espically if you know that he is a guy with a reputation....and you certianly don't kill youself for a guy like that. This whole opera is unreal and the way it is represented makes me not like it at all.
