Subject: Gothic Cathedrals

My comment concerns the idea of the use of light in Gothic Cathedrals, as opposed to Romanesque. I find it fascinating how the architects were able to take such a simple idea as light and turn it into something truly awe-inspiring. While the Romanesque cathedrals are themselves, fairly impressive structures, inside they give the worshipper a sense of being enclosed in a rather dark space, which to some may make the experience rather depressing or uninviting. However, with the addition of the large panes of colored stained glass windows, those who worshipped in the Gothic cathedrals could greater feel God's presence with them while they prayed. Light has always played such an important part in religion as a representation of God and the Gothic cathedrals are spectacular examples of this today.
