Subject: The Sistine Chapel: "The Agony and The Ecstasy"

There is a movie called "The Agony and The Ecstasy," which is about the commission of Michaelangelo by Pope Julius II to paint the Sistine Chapel. Starring Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison, it is pretty faithful to facts surrounding the lives of Michaelangelo and Pope Julius II and their feelings for each other during the artist's endeavor. It's a really good movie, and if you get the time I really suggest you rent it because it is that good and it helps one remember things from the reading because it is entertaining.

Anyway, now for the insightful part because I am done with my advertising the movie. (Rent it: you won't be sorry--it's that good.) Anyway, for a long time, I wondered what the title could mean. After reading the sections on Michaelangelo and the Sistine Chapel, it finally all makes sense. The agony is probably referring to the strife between the patron and the artist and all the troubles in the commission thereof, and the ecstasy referring to the intensity of beauty of the finished product. See, knowing art pays off.
