Funny that "Die Zauberflote" should be mentioned because I was thinking in class about how the two relationships in "La Boheme" have parallels to those in "Die Zauberflote." The relationship of Rudolfo and Mimi seems to be based on deeply rooted emotions seen in the immediate love finding in the loft during Act I. It is similar to the relationship between Tamino and Pamina, who fell in love with each other instantly, too, and seemed to have deeply rooted emotions for each other, too, because the love survived Tamino's tests. By the same token, the relationship of Muesetta and Marcello (M&M--what a chocolately realtionship!) is purely based on the physical seen most clearly in how Muesetta entices Marcello to return to her. This is similar to the physical-ness of Papaganeo and the relationship he sought with Papagana, wanting "a pretty little wife." (I know, isn't it pathetic that I can quote opera off the top of my head. Oh well.)
