Subject: Cultural Literacy in Today's World

Mr. Fornale always says that we shall eventually come across in the world some of the things that we encounter in class. Two funny things that I have come across include:

*"Singin' in the Rain"--as creepy as this may sound, the Pathmark in Botony Village plays this in their produce section when the sprinklers go on to water the vegetables and fruits. I discovered this when I was shopping this weekend...and it just creeped me out. BTW, Gene Kelley looks much better than the vegetables in that store. ;-)

*"Chanson du Toredor" Song from Bizet's "Carmen"--this song was parodied in an episode of "Gilligan's Island" when they wrote their own opera based upon Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice." The lyrics went: "Neither a borrower, nor a lender be. And don't forget, stay out of debt. And there's just one other thing to do: to thine own self be true. And there's just one other thing, that you have to do: to thine own self be true." And the baritone that sung this song when we watched it in class sounded much better than Jim Bacchus, but then again, I could understand what Bacchus was singing.

Anyway, I just thought that you guys might find this as amusing as I did. Does anyone else have similar such stories?
