Subject: Dancing

I just want to talk about the dancing in Singin' in the Rain. I think it is choreographed so well! I like how none of the numbers are very similar, they all have differant aspects that make them unique. Mr. Fornale made a comment in class the other day about how Debbie Reynolds is so much smaller that Kelly and O'Connor but doesn't get lost in the shuffle throughout their dance number together. The famous scene of Gene Kelly dancing down the street in the rain is wonderful as well. It is remarkable how well the choreographer was able to set up this number so it looks realistic, it looks like something somebody might do, not a set up dance routine that took several hours, or even days to learn. O'Connor's number of Make 'em Laugh is almost slap-stick. That is not something that a normal person could do, and is definetly not one that could be easily reproduced. And finally, I want to comment on the dance scene with Cyd Charisse. I think aside from the fact that it is represenative, and may be interpreted to mean other things, it's just great! It is just more proof of the individuality of all the numbers. So far, we haven't seen anything like it. All-in-all I think that Gene Kelly did an astounding job choreographing this musical, just adding another talent to the many that he already possessed.
