Subject: Assignment numbetr one

I have now marked all your assignments and given them back to Jeff so you will be getting them back before Christmas - Christmas post permitting.

I passed everyone so no need to worry. The majority were very good and I think it was a good idea to do the critical reading exercise at this point in the programme.

There are a few comments that everyone might be interested in:

1. Technical things like referencing tripped up a few people - I have given quite a lot of feedback on individual scripts about this. It would be a good idea to get it sorted out early in the programme.

2. You must get into the habit of giving page references for direct quotes. You must, you must.

3. More positively, there was a refreshing amount of free-thinking going on, and I think that this year's cohort will be much crisper in their dismissal of some of the more popular thinkers than in previous years. This bodes really well for the future. Congratulations to those of you who were prepared to take on some of the heavy weights - you won.

4. I was surprised by how open people were to psychodynamic theory and how many of you were prepared to see its place in organisational analysis. This is another marked change on last year. It's not that the theory is necessarily right, but it does imply that lots of you are prepared to go behind the very simple and naive explanations given in so much management writing. I don't mind if you choose psychodynamics or chaos theory or actor network theory - just having a go is enough for me!

5. Try and stamp out those rhetorical questions. It implies that you have not done the analysis necessary to answer the questions you set. Is this a real issue? Does this matter? How can we decide how crucial a matter this is? See what I mean - you tell me!

6. These were some of the most interesting assignments I have read for a long time. They were almost invariably well-written (which is a first) and came at things from really interesting angles. I was struck by new things in articles that I had already read before which was great.

That's probably enough, then.

Ann
