Just a thought, untested of course. Did you try creating a specific image type and just assigning the graphic to it?
Example

MyGraphic := TTifGraphic.create;
MyGraphic.assign(yourgraphic);
//Process the file\\
MyGraphic.free;

I am sorry to waste your time if this does not help. I had a similar problem before (not threading though) and this helped.
