Subject: Adding special effects to an image

I have an application that resizes images using Envision's library. Works very well. Now I would like to add a special effects border on two sides of the image to give the frame a 3-dimensional appearance (Webshots does it). This is a new area for me so I was hoping womeone could guide me to some literature on how this could be done.
