Thanks Michel but I think we are on different topics or I don't understand.

Here is more of what I think I know: Offset printing presses cannot print grayscale so grayscale images either real photos or digital versions need to be converted to descrete black and white images. The process of converting the grayscale images (in several image processing utilities we have) is call lines screening. We set the LPI which is different than the DPI to what ever the guy with the printing press says his press can use. We also say whether to use diagonal, vertical or horizonal lines. Then we run the process and the image is converted to a format that under a magnifier looks like varying width lines and to the naked eye looks like the image. Obviously the higher the lpi the better it looks.
