Shame to Helen Clark

Prime Minister apologises over fake charity painting

14.04.2002

3.30pm
Prime Minster Helen Clark has apologised for putting her name to a $1000 charity auction painting she did not paint.

"Putting my name to a painting I did not do was an error of judgement I deeply regret and I apologise," Miss Clark said in a statement.

"Politicians are under a lot of pressure to be helpful to a charity, and to my certain knowledge, I am far from being the only MP to have assisted with a contribution of this kind. It should be a salutary lesson to all."

The prime minister was today reported to have offered a painting signed by her to an auction in aid of Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE).

The painting was by artist Lauren Fouhy, a work commissioned by the prime minister's office, the Sunday Star Times report said.

The painting fetched $1000 at the auction and was sold to Auckland businessman Henry van Dijk. Miss Clark has agreed to reimburse Mr Van Dijk, the report said.

Miss Clark said at the time she was trying to be helpful to the charity.
