Rhetorical design logic: Lauren Dapper, Debra Edwards, Sarah Ryan of group STAIRS

Barbie: "Well, Ken, I think your idea is great and it would work, but have you considered fundraising? Not only is fundraising a great way to raise money, but it is also a way to have fun at the same time. By promoting "woodchuck awareness" within the community, our membership could increase dramatically. Additionally, there wouldn't be any additional out of pocket expense for our current members who are already dedicated to our cause. Again, raising dues by ten dollars per member would work, but with fundraising, Ken, we could potentially raise twice as much money. It would also be a wonderful bonding opportunity/outreach program for our group. Tell me what you think, Ken. Does this possibility work for you? "Which option do you think would be more beneficial for the group? Remember, there are many different fund raising possibilities, and if you would like to discuss alternative options, I would be happy to work with you."
By using the rhetorical design logic, we were able to state Barbie's case while keeping the group's collective goals in mind. By using words such as "could," "potentially" and "possibly," we presented Barbie's idea as one of many possible options, instead of the only option. So as not to discount the quality of Ken's idea, Barbie reassured him that his idea was "great," but she asked him to consider the benefits of the two options and allowed him to decide for himself which one would be more beneficial for the group. Finally, instead of saying that he could come "talk to her" or "work with her," Barbie told Ken that she would be happy to "work with him." In other words, since Barbie was willing to accommodate/incorporate Ken's ideas, she makes him feel like an important part of the team.
