In reply to: Stephen 's message, "How do we copy the Geelong and Swans models of not bottoming out" on 18:10 27/04/24 Sat

Cats built from the bottom up, and won flags in 2007, 2009, and 2011.

They then continually topped up and made finals, although they never looked good enough to win one.

It wasn't until they traded for elite players (in Patrick Dangerfield and Jeremy Cameron) that they won a flag in 2022.

Swans won flags in 2005 and 2012. They haven't entirely bottomed out. But despite making grand finals in 2014, 2016, and 2022, and trading big for Buddy Franklin, they haven't won a flag.

There's no point avoiding bottoming out if you're only making up numbers.

Somebody will now say, But you've got to be in it to win it.

Well, statistically, that's proven untrue. Being in it hasn't helped Sydney. Being in it didn't help Geelong until they traded for genuine class.

The teams who've been dynastic, such as Geelong, Hawthorn and Richmond (and even Brisbane), came up following prolonged sojourns at the bottom, netting gun players, building relatively balanced sides, and then addressing any need in trading. Cats did it, then brought in Ottens. Hawks did it and brought in Burgoyne and Lake. Even the Tigers netted some players to complement their rebuild.

I think it was Genghis here who posted thank fuck we stole a flag last year, and he's right.

Our list profile doesn't encourage longevity, and Collingwood's trading and drafting has been appalling.

They trade like they're trying to fill a hole but keep digging it deeper.
