In reply to: Optimax 's message, "Our system looks better with 3 tall backs?" on 19:42 13/04/24 Sat

An argument can be made that we played 1 tall back for most of last year, Moore, with "medium" support in Howe and Murphy. Murphy is (or at least was) a very good one one body player, and Howe has an excellent capacity to read the play and intercept the high ball.

I like Howe back myself, as I reckon he is a good zone player and frankly if the oppo is controlling the game well enough to be isolating one on ones in the forward 50 then it is our midfield that is the problem rather than the backs. When our system works we are a whole ground roll up zone defense.

The difference this year so far is Frampton. He has never played this well in his whole career, and against actual A grade big name opposition too. I think IF he can sustain that form he can make a huge difference to this team playing as the mainstay "genuine" KPD. (Maybe it was the GF vs Harris that showed him he could actually play the role? By shadowing a bloke of similar physical attributes who is one of the best in the business??)

Not sure Port is the game to try it, Dixon and Marshall are both genuinely big boys, and Georgiadis is a reasonably competitive third tall who hits up at the ball carrier.

Still have hopes for Dean, reckon he wasn't bad early considering the time he has had out of the game, he could come in to cover Moore's move to offence and keep Howe free to play as 3rd tall defender intercepting.

The reason I prefer Moore forward to Howe forward is that Moore is a good contested mark but also very quick on the lead, something that Howe is not, Moore would be able to push up to give an outlet in a way that Howe probably coudn't. Basically I think Howe forward is moving a "third tall" forward, while moving Moore forward is moving a "genuine KPP" forward.

If Frampton can be a "genuine KPP" in defense (something that does not require the nous and gifts of being a genuine forward KPP) then we have options we didn't appear to have last year.

My 2 cents anyway.
