Subject: Short but weasel answer is "I'd like to see him tried there"

The longer answer:

We need to remember that not only is he just 21yo but he missed virtually all of 2 consecutive years (2020 and 2021, due to Covid and a shoulder injury). And he hasn't had an ideal run even since then.

That said, while I admire Begg's on-field ethic, he could be almost the poster boy for "NQR", almost the definitive example for my long-held (pardon the pun) warnings re "What AFL role?" and skinny giants.

For a tall player, he has very good centre-bounce midfielder abilities and ethic .... but he's not built to be a gladiatorial ruck / hit-out machine and nor is he reliably competitive overhead.

He is agile, covers ground well and has good pace .... but that's more in comparison to most rucks or KPP types than to typical mid-sized running types.

He usually has clean hands in non-marking situations ... but he is not a go-to quality mark.

He is a good kick for depth and reliability ... but he has quite a wind-up (i.e. not economical kicking action.)

He has a good leap ... but is not strong body on body and nor is he good at positioning himself to take a mark.

At the play, he is a quick thinker and usually a good ball-reader and decision-maker ... but he is not a good play-reader (he's too often where the play isn't or won't be).

He has very commendable 2-way ethic ans is an enthusiatic tackler ... but he's not a physically-strong tackler.
---------------

If it was up to me, I would definitely keep him on the list for at least 2 more years because he does show glimpses of AFL attributes (not yet AFL form per se but at least glimpses of attributes) and is only 21yo and missed virtually 2 years of critical development time. Were it not for his ethic, I would be at best luke-warm about keepimg him.
---------------

I'm not confident he'll go on to sustain an AFL career but I rate him as a "possible". For him to make it, his improvement trend curve would have to be steeper than it's been up to 2024 thus far. It's a bit of a Catch-22 for him: he's not yet ready for an AFL spot and he needs development time but IMHO his development would be significantly fast-tracked by playing at AFL level compared to the error-saturated, slow-tempo of VFL games among "work experience kids and journeymen".

If he does make it, it may well be as a tall utility role player. I have long suspected his best-suited role would be KD, especially "CHB". That role utilises his athleticism and 2-way ethic (including accountability) and affords him a charter of aerial spoiling instead of needing him to be go-to quality overhead.

So the summary answer to your question, old mate, is "Yes" ... and stated with quiet confidence if not absolute conviction.
