Subject: ‘Priority is my future’: Pies defender Nathan Murphy retires due to concussion
In reply to: rooka... 's message, "Talk of a press conference/announcement early today..." on 08:11 16/04/24 Tue

Collingwood premiership player Nathan Murphy has decided to retire immediately rather than risk further concussions, with the club saying the call was made to “medically retire”.

He is the second AFL player to retire prematurely after being concussed in last year’s finals series, without having played another game. Melbourne’s Angus Brayshaw retired in February on medical advice, five months after being knocked out in the qualifying final.

The 24-year-old Murphy told his teammates before training on Tuesday morning.

“I feel it is the right time and the right decision for me to hang up my footy boots,” Murphy said.

“I love my football, but my priority is on my future and ensuring I live a full and healthy life.”

Murphy has not played since he was subbed out at quarter-time of the 2023 grand final due to concussion. He had passed a concussion test but admitted to seeing double at the break and ruled himself out.

Having suffered 10 concussions in his sporting career, Murphy contemplated over summer whether he should play on, but the AFL concussion panel gave him the all-clear to continue. The decision to keep playing was made after Murphy and his parents, Deborah and Shaun, met with the Collingwood board to ensure all parties were conscious of the risk.

Murphy then decided during pre-season to take a break from playing while he contemplated his future, admitting he was finding it difficult to get in the right frame of mind to play.

He knew that his style of play made him vulnerable to concussion, with the Magpies happy to give him an extended break before he became available for selection.

Out of contract at the end of the season, the Magpies are expected to meet his contractual terms, and he will also be eligible for a payout as the concussion will be considered a career-ending injury.

Murphy played 57 matches for Collingwood, including the 2023 flag as a vital component of the Magpies’ defence alongside skipper Darcy Moore and high-flier Jeremy Howe. He was pick 39 in the 2017 national draft.
