Tassie will be required to trade some of those early picks. For the right teams, this helps them when they need it most

If you are contending, or even pushing for finals, there is no point in trading out a star for a pick. Not unless you are going to get ready to play, generational talent that could extend your window for a few years. Tassie would then have to agree to give up a shot at that.

Even if you are coming off the bottom it makes little sense unless you are trading someone you know is going to be a bust. But then, it's likely that Tassie will know that too.

But if you are heading to the well and you think you have enough quality senior talent to keep standards up while you're down, then you could jettison someone you think might be past his best when you want to contend next. A 26 year old that can help them win games early might get a nice trade price.

The Northern academy issue isn't as much of a problem for us. NSW maybe but not so much QLD. Yes, we ightn't be able to access that talent, but without the academies, would that talent have been available? WOuld it have been developed as well?

Sure, the academies do screw with us a bit but I think that a fair bit of that is offset. Furthermore, each time an academy talent turns up, the Northern team is effectively out of the running for the kids in the southern states

I think it would behoove the southern states well to bid more aggressively on those academy picks. The AFL isn't going to change the rules to even things out so it is up to the clubs to do it themselves.
