1. Outstanding personal work rate . Has anyone in Black and White run harder and as quick for so long in matches . He was so “ industrious “ and honest in his efforts.
2. Ball winning ability . If he was “in the hunt “ to win possession , you’d back him in.
3. Courage . Absolutely unquestioned, heart on sleeve player. Every Pie supporter loved and admired him .

As a pure aside , at times we have seen players with specific superior skills ( eg they might be better marks or purer kicks etc ) , who lack quality 1 mentioned above and you are left asking “ why not?” …..yet this is why players like Swan are so memorable . “Half Hearted “ was never part of his lexicon .
Who compares to Dane ?
Dusty , though Swan didn’t bother with the don’t argue fend off , he was capable of shrugging off tackles .
