Subject: COB ….its impossible to compare them over the ages and for many reasons
In reply to: Curmudgeonly Old Bastard 's message, "Peter was probably the most unique player I have seen in my 63 years" on 20:18 20/06/24 Thu

I’m 17 yrs senior to you and while that means fading memories and diminishing recall …but I am certain of this : Vic Park mid winter was a quagmire in the 1950’s , tailor made for string legged players like Lou Richards whose 250 games and 423 goals are often forgotten in the spate of modern statistics .
Those stats need to be read in the knowledge that he Neil Mann ( 6’1 or 2” and Bob Rose 5’10” ) were the ruck contingent . Lou was 3” shorter than Current day champ Billy Elliot .
He was so good opposing supporters screamed and cursed at him constantly - from “ Collingwood Forever”

“ He was a gutsy, famously cheeky, rover with a keen eye for goal. And one of the best captains Collingwood has ever known.

“Lou was the best captain I’ve ever played under,” said Des Healey. “He was a magnificent team man and a real great Collingwood player — he could almost win matches for Collingwood on his own by getting the other players in.” Lou was simply a great leader said Thorold Merrett. “He was always firing you up, telling you to get up if you were hurt and urging you on from start to finish.”

So that’s a start point right thru to all those other champs in the decades since . Grounds have changed, rules have changed, the kid Allen we recruited from WA in 2022 as a potential future big bodied on baller is taller than the 1950’s first ruck Neil Mann . It’s a different game in so many ways . Kids arrived at 14 or 15 and if they were thought good enough , they were chosen . The late Ken Bennett was in yr 11 at Dandenong HS and 17 when playing for the Pies in 1958 .

Comparing individuals over the decades is not as relevant as recalling how they measured up in their era .

In five years there will be another batch . Enjoy each new group as they evolve .
Some will exceed expectations and some might not achieve what was hoped for .
That’s what makes being a supporter such an unexpected mix .
