Subject: Ash — watching the Swan interview re his initial efforts at CFC
In reply to: Annabelle 's message, "A mid-season report for the bye hiatus!" on 20:38 20/06/24 Thu

and the MM “ chat” plus inspiration of team mates ( Taz in weights room and BJ in running plus Dids ..non specifically maybe just generally ) makes one reflect on how a bloke like Ash , at mid career stage , on the very cusp of making waves at the top level , specifically because he DOES have seriously impressive weapons (overhead, by foot , play reading and both strength and, in general terms, mobility wise) , and IS THE RIGHT SIZE for a number of roles , can fall short for wholly controllable reasons ie ( as you identify AB)

Lack of intensity
Laconic
Need to improve his output to compete

Opportunity knocks for most of us in life in a multitude of ways and in 2024 with Checkers, Billy E , JDG, Cox and variously a few others missing or out of form , the golden opportunity lobbed on Ash’s doorstep . Here we are a few months on and this young bloke surely has a chance for self analysis and change at VFL .

If he was too slow , or couldn’t hold a mark to save himself or couldn’t kick over a peanut or didn’t read the play ….as a supporter , you’d conclude “ fair enough” .
However none of those things are true. The young bloke has freakish talent .
Perhaps an equivalent (near) physical and talent laden player is / was Taz , with two major differences
- Taz could never have been said to be laconic or lacking in competitiveness . He lead and lead…hard and straight at the ball carrier , he leapt and leapt regardless of his own safety . His leads took him to the wing he was so desperate to present for possessions and scoring opportunities for the team
-maybe lesser known to the average fan is that Taz had done the strength work to enable him to compete against big defenders and ruckmen dropping back to clog up his opportunities
Folk will point at the Ash calendar …he’s 27 this year, yet Fred is 26 soon and Frammers is 28 in Nov . McStay is 30 , Checkers 31 , Cox 33, and Billy turns32 in Aug …..and ask yourself
“who are the next KPFs on our list ?” ….

In recent times we have turned to the ever fabulous Jeremy Howe (35 soon ) and Houdini Hyphen ( 31 later this season)

I’m wondering whether Ash can turn things around and hope that he can because looking at those names above, the injury issue and their respective stages , there are vulnerabilities .
