there are a few variables at play.

Clearly Murphy is a big loss because he was arguably our most importand defender and he played that role that allowed others to intercept while he did a lot of the spoiling and close checking. However he really didn't click until part way through 2022 and the defence was pretty solid until then. Like Viv Richards et al, his reputation grows by the day. He isn't superman.

Jordyn Lewis mentioned the other night that our defence is getting ambushed with all these extra entries and the number of uncontested disposals we are conceding.


Murphy was clearly a major spoiler so it's hardly surprising that Moore's stats in this area have increased. He is the leading player in the competition by average and total for spoils. This seemed to have replaced his intercept marking which is down. Nonetheless he's still highly rated in overall intercepts. In fact in both spoils and intercepts he clearly shades Weitering.

Nobody doubts that Weitering is probably the best defender in the league, but he does have the advantage of playing behind the likes of Cripps and Walsh and escapes matching up on Curnow and McKay.

Overall our defence is down with Q struggling and Howe being spasmodic but not bad when playing as a forward. It's been unsettled with Frampton and Dean rotating in and out.
