Subject: While I agree we could have done with Naughton...
In reply to: Pendles Boys 's message, "Stephenson certainly not 6.. Hine may not like red head's.. but Naughto" on 20:14 06/09/24 Fri

...I get the impression that, at the Pies, he would be almost a prime candidate for "whipping boy" status given his "known potential" but having rolled out some of the performances that he has shown across his 6 seasons to date.

Despite a significant "highlights reel", I'm not sure that I land him in the top 10 or 12 key forwards during his time on a senior list (let's say the last 5 years).

We sometimes lose sight of the fact that Stevo was probably one of the reasons our 2018 season went terribly close to a Premiership.

2018 saw the debut season of both Stevo and Mihocek with them contributing 38 goals and 29 goals respectively. The others were De Goey (48), WHE (42) and Josh Thomas (38).

Would we have been as effective with Naughton in that team at the time?

I'm not sure, but it is interesting to note that he was played largely as a defender in that year at the Bulldogs (18 games for 12 disposal average per game and a return of 2 goals).

Stevo ended up winning the Rising Star.

What's transpired since then has almost been a complete drop-off (and likely dropping-of-the-bundled) by Steveo, but I'm not sure what contributing factor those "Covid years" had on his whole outlook re: AFL.

Had we won that 2018 Flag, especially on the back of the season Stevo had for us, nobody would be lamenting the "error" of drafting Stevo instead of Naughton.

In the GF, Stevo had a fairly ordinary game - 9 disposals and 2 goals.

In fact, it was a pretty close performance to Naughton's GF against Melbourne in 2021 where he also returned 9 disposals, but with 1 goal instead of 2.

In hindsight, would I have wished we had picked Naughton instead of Stevo at the draft table?

Absolutely...but the point is that I doubt whether he would have made the bigger point of different than, say, Sam Taylor who was taken in the same draft at pick 28. So if hindsight could be used, Taylor would have been my pick for who I would have drafted in term of KP player.

And others who were taken in that draft include Oscar Allen (#21) and Tom De Koning (#30).

It also makes me think of how lucky we had been to get Mihocek in that draft as a rookie pick.
