Subject: Yep - fair call - but it then highlights that the AFL "equalisation" is flawed
In reply to: Thommo 's message, "Definitely plays a part TBM, but if they were down the bottom without recent flags" on 22:13 09/09/24 Mon

The AFL has maximum list sizes, salary caps, and draft pick awarding all designed to prevent teams with huge resources to just gobble up the best players in the competition.

Imagine if Collingwood could use its financial base, for example, to entice players to move and not waorry about a salary cap!

The reason Geelong is able to attract the talent is because players are prepared to take less than "market value" to be there.

In a way, the lure of a Premiership is what many players strive for - it's why players over the years have chosen to even come to the Pies (Treloar, for example) or the Tigers (Lynch).

But the AFL makes these dealings difficult by virtue of the equalisation they have in place.

We are not that poorly run a team in the AFL, but there is a limit to what we have available to us due to the way we need to compete in a 9 team city.

We have had players want to come to the team but had neither the cap space or may not have had the draft currency to deal them in.

There's no doubt that Geelong is a well run club. But they do play in more finals because - as I mentioned in another post - they do have bit of an advantage during the H&A season whereby they play more home games - I mean that they have a REAL home ground advantage...most teams visiting GMHBA Stadium might see that ground once a season if they are lucky, but most would only experience once evey couple of seasons.

Two extra wins by virtue of this advantage makes a BIG difference to ladder position.

And while Geelong might bemoan playing "home" games at the MCG against a tenant there (Collingwood, Melbourne, Richmond, Essendon, Carlton, etc) it's not like the MCG is unfamiliar territory to them in the same way that GMHBA Stadium is to all visitng sides.

They play more finals because, in my opinion, they have a distinct home ground advantage during the H&A season that increases their W/L ledger to allow them to get enough wins to qualify for finals.
