Subject: It is a good argument - which can also be levelled at the Pies
In reply to: Thommo 's message, "Very interesting argument Annabelle" on 21:12 19/09/24 Thu

We've been the recipients of the "attraction factor" as well as any club in the competition...

Historically, we've had big name players come to us, or linked to us (but the situations didn't afford that occurring).

But we've enticed the likes of Pebbles and Buckley. Chalmers (when he was touted as one of the next "big things") wanted to land at the Pies but that wasn't able to occur.

In days of yore I can remember a range of players either arriving on our doorstep, or claiming they wanted to arrive on our doorstep - Cloke, Raines, Teasdale, Round, Hardie, etc

And in the last 20 years, we have had players want to reach the "B&W destination" but in some cases this couldn't happen because of the capital now required or because of certain rules in place across the AFL.

Lots of clubs recently have missed out on players due to contractual reasons and/or reasons of cost (be it salary or draft pick capital)

But I wholeheartedly agree with what Belle has intimated - that - as well as being a well-run club - Geelong is a destination location of sorts for a number of reasons.

But we've attracted our fair share of targets as well, who are usually players who crave the playing in front of (guaranteed!!!!) big crowds and who know the Collingwood "brand" can bring them exposure that they simply wouldn't get from other clubs.

We've avoided losing guys like De Goey to clubs who were prepared to offer them much more coin than to remain at the Pies - yet they chose to remain.

I think there is also a cyclical nature to all of this.

Even North Melbourne - which must have a battle every year fighting the "big boys" in the marketplace as well as on the ground - has had quite a few payers nominate them as a playing destination: Logue, Stephens in the last few trade periods and - this year - Darling and Parker are nominating the Roos as a destination.

St Kilda is attracting a few players who have nominated it for their desired destination.

The northern clubs (and particulalrly GWS and Gold Coast) are the ones bearing the brunt of mass player exodus year-after-year - not difficult to understand given that most of the boys they draft come from interstate and a significant number - especially once they are identified as a valuable AFL player - might identify an opportunity to go back to their home state if they can land on an AFL list there.
