Subject: Dare I say it...we can be our own worst enemy
In reply to: Annabelle 's message, "Why have equalisation policies when the Cats, Swans and Lions can clearly circumvent them by stealth." on 21:47 20/09/24 Fri

I nearly choked when BT announce that the SGC was a "packed house" after an aerial shot showed both the SCG and Allianz Stadium (where the rugby was being played)

Now, while I don't doubt that the AFL game had far more spectators at the ground, the SCG was anything but "packed" - there were heaps of vacant seats clearly visible on the telecast.

I'm sure the AFL would love the Pies to be in the Finals as they would guarantee sold-out games within hours of the tickets going on sale.

However, the AFl is also about trying to drum up enough support from the interstate markets, so they know the only way these things build in those places is trough some level of success of the interstate teams.

As a guaranteed source of income, the AFL has very little to worry about when it comes to the Pies - even when we have been cellar-dwellers, the games attendance (and the related advertising dollars raised from TV coverage) means the AFL will never go hungry while Collingwood is playing.

Collingwood is the AFL's "safe seat"!

Regardless of what happens, they get the kick-back from Collingwood games - financially and in terms of exposure.

Being the safe seat means that they can afford (within some reasonable parameters) to provide a "little shafting" without impacting their bottom line.

If Collingwood supporters wer to miraculously NOT turn up to games and NOT watch games, the market would eventually fall.

Not ever likely to happen - we are too invested.
