Subject: The thing that hurts about losing Henry
In reply to: muddy 's message, "After Ollie Henrys’s mark, 20 metres out and directly in front," on 17:33 21/09/24 Sat

...is that we effectively were made to "sink" our first draft pick from 2021 on a player who ultimately wanted to depart.

Yet, given that Mitchel was pivotal cog, the short-term benefit was that a Flag was realised out of that departure. The long term, however, may still be in Geelong's favour depending on how Henry's career progresses from this point on - we know Mitchell is not going to be a long-term prospect for us.

The other party in that 3-way trade, Cooper Stephens from Geelong to hawthorn, has also reached a bit of a nadir, given that I believe Hawthorn delisted him this week.

So - for the time being - that trade has to be viewed as a positive outcome for the Pies.

The other piece in that 2021 trade puzzle will depend on what transpires with Jakob Ryan - who was the player we selected at the 2022 draft with the pick we got in the Oli Henry deal.

As well as Cooper Stephens, the Hawks got picks 41 and 50 which they packaged up with picks 52 and 63 to get pick 36 in the 2022 draft and a 2023 third rounder (which they packaged up with a 2023 second rounder for pick 27). It gets a bit hard to track what the Hawks ultimately did due to a lot of "live trading" at the draft.

Not sure how long Mitchell has left with the Pies - but given that he was pivotal to our Flag success, you'd have to be happy with the short-term outcome at the expense of what may transpire in the longer term.
