...I know that these things are alleged - but I wouldn't know and I can't personally verify whether this is true or not.

Look...every club could potentially have some "philanthrapist" that might approach a certain player with offers that are "outside" what a club officially pays them and we wouldn't know. And Collingwood might be no different in this regard.

Do players get special offer of international travel by our partner airline Emirates that other club players might not get? Or Brisbane players getting free insurance (Youi) or fuel cards (Caltex)? Or the better Sydney players have some deals with sponsors such as VW or Qatar?

I am sure that the AFL will audit everything it CAN (together with what the ATO discovers about the players and their earnings), but I dare say that there is a possibility that same players - across the whole competition - probably would have some level of "additional" incentive to play for a certain club ahead of others.

There is no doubt that -for whatever reason - Geelong has been able to have several players over the years take unders just to stay there.

Whether there is anything "underhand" about that or not, I'm not so sure and can't possibly know.

Moore was offered big money at one stage to leave, but chose to stay at the Pies.

De Goey as well.

Don't you think Nick Daicos - even at this very early stage of his career - could have command more on a contract than what he is currently on (and I'm sure his manager would already have had significant offers), but he chose to sign and extension with the Pies to 2029?

If it was all about the money for an AFL player, why do so many turn their backs on the "best financial offer" and choose to stay (or depart) for a desired destination?

Looking at this from my own perspective...I could have applied for positions over my career where I stood the chance of earning 30% and - perhaps - up to 50% more than I was currently earning, but I chose not to. Why is that?

Sometimes, you are happy with your lot - you don't want the extra stress/travel/re-establishment that goes with a new role, regardless of what it is paying.

I don't think I'm any different to most people - there are some who will strive for reaching the highest rung of the ladder they can, while others might stay put because they don't want the hassle to alternative offers.

I also know of many people who have actually changed careers for a lower-paying occupation because the conditions and lifestyle-choices that the alternative offers has been more to their liking.

Like my post indictes, the 2007 to 2011 Flag teams at Geelong were won by teams whose players were almost exclusively drafted to Geelong and played from very early in their careers at that club.

Their ability to draw a big name recruit (Dangerfield, Cameron, etc) has only occurred since their Flag in 2011 and in that time they have secured a single Flag.

Yes, they have had the Hawkins and Selwoods and Enrights and Bartels play for, perhaps, that what other clubs might have had to offer them in an "open" market, but were - for whatever reason - satisfied with their lot down at Geelong.

Is there something "underhand" in this?

I just don't know - I am happy to consider that there is the possibility of it.
