For a start, to get into the system any player would not be so reckless (or avoid being so) as to not give any indication that might otherwise compromise their opportunities at ANY club.

So they will conceal any such desires that they might be seduced by some "go home" factor.

For example, should North NOT have drafted Jason Horne-Francis because he might one day want to go home to SA?

We faced the same prospect with Ed Allan - he hails from WA and his dad was a celebrated Fremantle player and their first ever captain.

Allan (and his dad) made it quite clear after him being drafted that the fact he was chosen by a VIC team would not result in him seeking to go home.

Obviously, this remains a chance, however, and we don't know what the future may hold in this regard.

But this also becomes tricky for a club.

I hate typing this, but it HAS been the subject of discussion in the past aand I prsent it purely for an example of WHY avoiding drafting a player because of uncertainty around a "go home" factor opens a can of worms....

Teams have - in the past - discussed some concerns around draft interstate Indigenous players because of the draw back home to Family and Country - and this is where we hit some very delicate discussions.

Given that most Indigenous talent is located in WA and the northern states, do we avoid drafting such players because we think that they might be drawn back to their home regions?

Does it mean we ONLY draft players who come from Victoria (or even Melbourne-only if we believe that the acquisition of Oli Henry and his subsequent defection is considered an easily-identifiable end-result)?

How do you "assess a go home factor" is really where the problems lie - and the associated impacts (some of which are described above) makes this a very difficult proposition.
