Subject: Because GC will need points in THIS year's draft
In reply to: Rodda83 's message, "Why wouldn't you just do the deals separately. Noble > Pick 20, Pies F1 > GC pick 12" on 18:26 27/09/24 Fri

I agree your proposal makes perfect sense...but I think if we can provide Noble AND some picks-with-points to Gold Coast, we can get pick 12 in return (especially if we can match close to that pick value so that GC can use those points on matching Academy bids).

Perhaps our future first is not given in a deal with GC but someone else (and this is where I would have a slightly different perspective than Twomey.

If we could turn 2025 first pick into, say, a second and a couple of third round picks (with points value) in both this year's and next year's draft, we can use the acquired 2024 picks to provide GC with a "close to points equivalence" (plus Noble) for their pick 12, and while we don't have our 2025 first round pick, we know that we should have the points necessary to obtain McGuane.

If we do have pick 12, we have a lot of flexibility in this years draft.

For example:
- go to the 2024 draft with pick 12
- if Armstrong is available at pick 12, select him
- if Armstrong (and perhaps Tauru) are not available at pick 12, we could go the "next best" - which will likely be a midfielder type, or...
- live trade pick 12 into, say a later first and a late second (there will be teams very keen to grab a highly-rated midfielder at 12 I'm sure)
- Let's say GWS offer 14 and 34, or Freo offer 16 and 35 for 12 (assuming those picks aren't used for player acquisitions, or even perhaps Sydney off 18 and 19 for 12 and our second or third...
- haing one of thsoe picks listed above would still allow us a very good chance of grabbing a good-rated tall in this draft (and possibly even two)

So I think you trade makes sense, but I don't this a straight swap of our first rounder next year for Gold Coast's first rounder this year helps them in any way when we know they need to acquire draft points THIS year.

The question will be whether we go to the draft with a strategy to select the "best" player available or select for "need".

If we were to have a high pick, it becomes an intersting assessment of how we use it.

I know many on this board are disappointed at not drafting certain "types" of players because we have a need for that type.

Yet, there are many who think you should just go with "best player" even though he may not necessarily fill a list need.

Like I said....it will be a very interesting trade and then draft period.

Can't wait to see how it all plays out.
