For example, the best-performed forwards will usually or often have the best midfield supply (quality and quantity) that allows them to score heavily.

This lends itself to the WHOLE team being better as a result.

However, if such a team has a less-than-optimal defense, they may not realise the success they should.

Case in point would be the Blues, who have Curnow and mcKay up forward, and who have received some great supply from the likes of Cripps and Co, but who have also leaked at the other end due to a less-than-optimal defense.

A finely-balanced team can do a number of things, including:
- improve the overall performance of individual players due to - quite often - a better system that plays to all individual strengths whilst, at the same time;
- provide "cover" for team or individual deficiencies by virtue of an optimal "whole-team support structure".

So there will be years when the successful teams have the best-performed forwards and other years where the successful teams will not necessarily have the best-performed forwards (and you can substitute "forwards" for virtually any other positional category).

There is no "guaranteed" formula, but a confluence of a variety of variable, including those relating to the opposition you play against on any particular day.

The best we can do is have our best available side on the field of play and have the best "man-in-for-man-out" options when a replacement is required.
