Subject: Also indicates how fragile list management can be...
In reply to: Terry Boulder 's message, "Shows just how hard drafting is." on 13:05 29/10/24 Tue

We knew Jarrod Witts was likely to be a handy (and perhaps even "good") ruckman, but the fact that we had Grundy and then went down the path of utilising Cox and the "shitruck" options of utilising forwards meant that he sought opportunities elsewhere.

Which illustrates the other complexities around managing a list of players who all want to push claims to play at the highest level.

Many supporters bemoan the fact the our list has "weaknesses" within it, but the simple fact of the matter is that, if everyone is a gun player, you simply cannot afford them when competitive offers are thrown their way by other clubs and/or the players themselves seek opportunities elsewhere if they fall behind in the "pecking order".

Selecting players at the draft is a gamble and then choosing how to best utilise the players (once you have them) also provides no guarantees around their longevity with you.

In some way, the competition then is "self-regulating" by virtue of certain teams not being able to amass too many gun players who all cannot fit into a senior starting 18/22.

The "expansion teams", while having had the good fortune of getting access to a large number of the best young talent within their draft years, have obviously had to contend with the fact that some of those players have chosen to be elsewhere and the money offered (even with the additional allowances the expansion clubs may have had) was unable to be matched.

This is why not every player on an AFL list can possibly be a "gun" and the best in their on-field position.
