...they could have drafted Houston with one of their first rounders and other "sweeteners", and still had a top-12 pick in this year's (deep) draft.

They have obviously targeted a specific player or two who they think will not have lasted to their first pick, so moved into the top 5.

But I totally agree with Pyeman - even should they nab their intended target, while likely that the player will be a good one, we know what can happen with past examples of gun players having succumbed to career-impacting injuries and/or form not translating to senior AFL football.

Of course, an injury scenario could also happen with Houston as well.

The point is that any decision made at any point in time is predicated on the "known" and hoping that this translates into the (unknown) future.
