Subject: They already have less players on the ground

They probably need more.

It feels like the AFL have given up on it a bit.

Making them play 3 games in 15 days or whatever it was, this season. No alignment with the VFLW or AFL season. Only 10 rounds, some teams don't even play each other. Among many other things.

Imo, they should play during the AFL season as curtain raisers. They should have alignment with the VFLW so there's a genuine reserves comp for them to play in if they aren't in the AFLW.

Interesting that you say "If we're going to take womens football seriously"... That is the biggest problem with the whole thing.

There is a large chunk of the football supporting community. Mostly men, but women as well. Who simply will not give the womens game the time of day. Many even seem to take pride in mocking it.
It's not up to the standard of the men (for a whole range of reasons) and because of that, they've written it off as a terrible product not worth taking seriously.

The thing is, it never will be the same as the men. Nor does it need to be the same to be entertaining and get some enjoyment out of. We all like different genres of music. Different flavours of ice cream. That's all this is. A different flavour of footy. And not everyone will like it but I think a lot of people are expecting it to be something it's not rather than trying to enjoy it for what it is.

AND it's pretty hard to develop AFLW when there's no money coming in the door. When the interest isn't there.

It has been pretty poorly managed from the start. It expanded way too quickly. We were just starting to see a real improvement a few years ago, then they brought in new teams and diluted the talent pool again.
Now, hopefully, there's no more teams to include (except Tassie). We can start to fill these sides with the best of the best again. But that will take time.

I'm hopeful the product will improve because I can see the talent at Coates and local level. But it's gotten off to a rough start. I feel like it's just become tokenism now and not taken seriously enough by clubs, the league and definitely not football supporters. That won't be easy to turn around. Even if the on field quality gets better, that's not much good to anybody if there's nobody watching it or willing to give it another chance
