The draft and salary cap was meant to even the competition. Has it?

Since 2000, Brisbane, Geelong, and Hawthorn have won four flags; Richmond's won three; Collingwood, West Coast, and Sydney have won 2.

Is that any different to the 1970s, 1980s, etc., when Hawthorn, Richmond, and Carlton were winning multiple flags, and the one-off premier was the outlier?

A big reason powerhouses dominate is that today's systems force clubs to bottom out, replenish through the draft and, if they get that right, climb the ladder -- a process that takes anywhere from 2 - 7 years.

Clubs at the top of that pyramid are teams in varying stages of rebuilds.

So what you usually have is one dominant side, a handful of good sides, and you can throw a blanket over ten others.

Every now and again, we'll have a transitional year or two (2005 - 06, 2016, 2023 - 24), right before the next ascension.
