Subject: Every Pie rated in the Hun

Collingwood
Nick Daicos
95
Imagine polling 38 Brownlow votes and losing by seven. Stiff? The AFL coaches thought so, voting Daicos their best player for 2024. At 22, and entering his fourth season, he is already a generational midfielder. Can he get better? You betcha. He scored 120-plus ranking points in almost half of his 2024 game including 186 in a round 24 demolition. Now a full-time mid, he silenced those who suggested taggers could be his kryptonite. 2024 rating: 94
Dan Houston
90
Collingwood didn’t sell the farm for the back-to-back All-Australian half-back with the booming right foot. But they off-loaded a few top paddocks to secure him. He is precisely what the Magpies need - and lacked in 2024. He ran at 82% kicking efficiency, had almost 11,000 metres gained, was elite in pressure and above average in intercept marks and one-on-ones. Will be stationed at half-back, not the midfield. 2024 rating: 86
Jordan De Goey
88
Collingwood’s flag quest might hinge on whether De Goey can regain his explosive power. He was in so much pain at times last year that he was forced to handball rather than kick. In 13 games, he couldn’t reach his dizzy 2023 heights. Travelled to Qatar to work on strengthening his nagging groin/abdominal issues, where he altered his gait. An interrupted preseason has made Pies fans nervous. Big watch in 2025! 2024 rating: 90
Josh Daicos
88
Imagine a Josh Daicos-Dan Houston double act moving the ball with razor-sharp precision from the half-back line into attack. Third in the Copeland (after winning it in 2023), Daicos rates elite in disposals, metres gained and scoreboard, while being above average in pressure and contested possessions. Is he better served on the wing? The jury is out on that one. But his coach clearly wants him off half-back. 2024 rating: 87
Darcy Moore
87
Moore wasn’t as damaging intercept-wise last year as his 2023 All-Australian year, in what was admittedly a challenging year sans Nathan Murphy. He had 35 fewer intercept possessions than in the flag year but was still the AFL’s No.1 one percenter player. The skipper needs someone to step up into Murphy’s role (Reef McInnes?) so he can have the freedom that makes him such a dangerous player. 2024 rating: 88
Darcy Cameron
85
Has leapt up almost 20 points on last year after finishing second in the Copeland and making the initial All-Australian squad. He was fifth in the AFL last year for contested marks - the highest return for a full-time ruckman - and returned career-best returns in disposals (+110) and hitouts (+183). The Pies are considering using him as a one-out ruckman with one of the key forwards (most likely Dan McStay) pinch-hitting when required. 2024 rating: 66
Jack Crisp
82
Mr Durable is now eight games away from breaking Jim Stynes’ record of 244 consecutive games. Internally, he is highly-valued, evidenced by another high-end B&F finish (fourth). Was the No.1 tackler at Collingwood (18th overall) last year, as well as second in club clearances and third for inside 50s, clearances and contested possessions. Can play wing, midfield or in defence. 2024 rating: 84
Scott Pendlebury
81
Look out Boomer, he’s coming for your record! Pendlebury ticked off his 400th game and 10,000th possession last year, and could shoot for Brent Harvey’s games record in 2026. Sixth in the B&F last year and an average of 20+ disposals per game proved the Magpies’ on-field assistant coach is not slowing up. A third flag - something no Magpie has achieved since the 1930s - remains a very big carrot. 2024 rating: 83
Brayden Maynard
79
He played every game in 2024 and was the club’s leading rebound 50m player (112), but the heart and soul defender combated on-going pain last season. Plantar fasciitis blunted his dash and impact. While still eighth in the best and fairest, he is predicting a better return in 2025. A fierce competitor, he provides flexibility in terms of match-ups and is a valued leader. 2024 rating: 81
Isaac Quaynor
78
Collingwood needs the IQ of 2023, not the one who struggled to make an impact last year. His disposal count dipped from 16.1 to 12.7 and his rebounds were down by 35, as he carried a few nagging issues, split with a stint on the wing. Expect a permanent return to defence, which will suit. He looks leaner heading into 2025. It’s over to you, IQ! 2024 rating: 85
Jeremy Howe
77
The composed defender reached a trigger to play on in 2025 but is running out of time to add a second flag to his CV. He will turn 35 midseason but is as important as ever, given the Pies looked wobbly in defence last year. His on field leadership, rebound 50m qualities (second at the club), elite metres gained ratio and his all-round versatility are invaluable. 2024 rating: 77
Steele Sidebottom
76
Wingman, tagger, running half-back and opportunist goalkicker - there are few roles this bloke can’t play. He was worried about being squeezed out of the side early last season (just seven disposals on Anzac Day) but responded magnificently to edge out Pendlebury to finish fifth in the Copeland. The 34-year-old’s footy smarts are still off the charts. The young Pies must tap into that intel while they can. 2024 rating: 73
Brody Mihocek
75
Something strange happened at Collingwood last year - the crash and bash forward didn’t win the club goalkicking award. He had won five in a row but lost a battle with his body, playing only 11 games and kicking 19 goals. Having carried the key forward stocks for years, he might finally get some help from Dan McStay and ex-Saint Tim Membrey. Back him in! 2024 rating: 75
Bobby Hill
74
The 2023 Norm Smith medallist got the forward’s ‘double’ last year - kicking 30.28 to win the club’s goalkicking and having the Pies’ most goal assists (23). Hill, at 25, should be reaching his peak now. Has put his contract talks on hold (he is locked in until 2026) but if he shines like we think he will, the Pies will need to get their cheque books out. 2024 rating: 70
Dan McStay
73
Ticked off a successive return from his ACL by playing five games and kicking 8.4 at the back end of last season. It’s given him something to build on in 2025, as he looks to resume what was a short-lived partnership with Mihocek. He is so structurally important to this team - as a strongly contested mark and potential back-up ruckman - and his hunger at missing out on the flag in 2023 burns deep. Let’s hope he stays sound. 2024 rating: 20* due to injury
Jamie Eillott
72
Trackwatchers have drooled over how fit and fired up the 32-year-old small forward is heading into 2025. There was a stage last year when the Magpies feared he might be in trouble as he battled a serious vascular issue in his foot. But he fought back after missing almost three months, and he kicked a goal in all but two of his 15 games for a total of 21. 2024 rating: 72
Harry Perryman
70
The Pies paid the ‘free agency tax’ - a little over the odds - for the former Giant mid/defender, who will add to their overall depth. At 26, he should be approaching the prime of his career (equal 8th in the Giants B&F last year). He’s no superstar - his stats have barely changed across the past five seasons - but he can become a serious player. The club has earmarked for a key midfield role rather than in defence. 2024 rating: 64
Pat Lipinski
69
We challenged this bloke to respond after an injury-hit 2023, and he did just that. One of nine Pies who played every game last year, he played a handful of important roles for the coach, who always backs him in. Has been earmarked for a wing role this year and must maintain the consistency as others will be challenging him. 2024 rating: 57
Lachie Schultz
68
Rightly or wrongly, the defensive small forward will be judged on the fact the Pies gave up a future first and a second round pick for him. Even he admitted the pressure got to him at times in year one. The glass half-full case: he kicked 24.21 from 20 games and was one of the AFL’s top forward 50m tacklers. The glass half-empty: he took time to adapt to the forward structure and at times struggled to make an impact. Needs to maintain his defensive pressure, while shooting for 30-plus goals in 2025.
Beau McCreery
68
The Pies forward wrecking ball won the grand final sprint last September, but wants more from the corresponding day this year. His 2024 mirrored his team’s. He just couldn’t get going when it mattered, as injuries blunted his output (10 goals from 17 games). Doesn’t turn 24 until April, so has improvement in him. It’s time for some cameo midfield moments now. 2024 rating: 62
Tim Membrey
67
This was a no-risk recruiting strategy which could pay dividends. The Magpies are toying with playing a three-tall attack, and he is in the mix. He rates elite in forward 50m ground ball gets (good for a big man) and above average in goals, accuracy and one-on-ones. Has kicked almost 300 goals from 179 games. The Saints might rue this one. 2024 rating: 63
Will Hoskin-Elliott
64
Few Magpies have reinvented themselves better - and more regularly - than this 31-year-old. Each time his spot in the side is questioned, he digs deep. Has played 20-plus games in each of the past four seasons, playing forward (elite in F50 marks), defence and the wing. The pressure will come again on his spot, but the coaches believe in him. 2024 rating: 58
Tom Mitchell
62
The Brownlow winner and premiership player is used to proving people wrong, but he will have to do so again after his body failed him last year - and again in the preseason. The inside mid managed just six games due to plantar fasciitis and the Pies desperately missed his grunt in the engine room. Another preseason setback hasn’t helped in his preparation. It’s a big year for him. 2024 rating: 74
Ed Allan
62
C’mon Fly, lock Ed in for the GWS clash next month. Aside from the kid in the No.35 jumper, he is the Pies’ most exciting young talent. Admittedly, we’re basing this off one game - Allan’s statement-making 21-disposal, six-tackle, one-goal performance in the final round last year. In 15 VFL games last year, he averaged 21 disposals and five tackles. He turns 21 this year and is the Pies’ inside mid of the future, and just maybe the present. 2024 rating: 46
Mason Cox
58
Are the Magpies ready to pivot from a two-ruck strategy to have a key forward pinch-hitting for Darcy Cameron? It looks that way, which might mean Cox is - again - fighting to keep his place in the team. The Pies missed him last year when he was out injured (16 games but still elite in hitouts won and hitouts to advantage). Every time he is doubted, the big man finds a way to get back in. Can he do it again at 34? 2024 rating: 64
Reef McInnes
52
Has been the Pies’ preseason bolter as he looks to transform from inconsistent forward to dependable defender. The Pies have a spot for him if he can hold it down, as he has during the preseason. Nathan Murphy was a forward before switching to defence and with McInnes on his last chance, he will be hoping his switch can be as successful. 2024 rating: 48
Billy Frampton
50
Frampton, Reef McInnes and Charlie Dean will fight for the last key defensive post. Frampton held it for most of last year, but his return in 18 games was modest. He was impressive with spoils, but rated below average for disposals and one-on-one, and poor in kicking. If you believe the intel, he might need to start off in the VFL and plot a return. 2024 rating: 53
Oleg Markov
48
One of the inspirational stories of the Pies’ 2023 flag side, Markov couldn’t replicate his energy and impact last year, due to injuries and form. He managed only 12 games with limited impact. Was delisted and re-rookied. Must find the right positional home and recapture that electrifying run of two years ago. 2024 rating: 58
Harry DeMattia
46
The Pies’ pick 25 from 2023 draft, his first season was cruelled by a finger injury which restricted him to 13 VFL games. Has played midfield and a bit of half-back, with his best game being a 131-rated performance in a VFL clash with Sydney. It won’t be an easy midfield to break into. But he will be given time to further development and will be pushing to make his debut this year. 2024 rating: 31
Tew Jiath
46
Good sized (188cm) intercept defender who was given a taste of AFL last year when debuting against North Melbourne. His two marks for the game were intercepts. His 15 games in the VFL saw him run at 15 disposals, five intercepts and three tackles. Expect him to get another taste of it again in 2025, as a teaser for the future. 2024 rating: 31
Harvey Harrison
45
Magpie trackwatchers have been delighted to see Harvey Harrison’s progress as he looks to overcome that August knee reconstruction. This kid can play and could be a second half of the year wildcard for the Pies. Scored a Rising Star nomination after booting three goals against Freo, and balances good forward craft with a defensive tackling mindset. 2024 rating: 40
Finlay Macrae
45
It’s now or never in black and white colours for the one-time first round draft selection. Has struggled to bridge the gap between strong VFL form and being competitive enough to keep his position in the AFL side. The inside mid could muster only nine senior games last year (for a total of 21 in four seasons), averaging only 10 disposals - 17.5 fewer than his VFL games. With Mitchell under a fitness cloud, there could be a spot, but is he good enough to claim it? 2024 rating: 52
Charlie Dean
45
Finally broke through for his long-awaited AFL debut in Opening Round last year after a luckless run with injury. Played nine games, including four in a row midseason but couldn’t hold down a regular spot. Is more of a negating defender than a flashy one but averaged five marks and 10 disposals per game. Is in the mix with McInnes and Frampton for last spot. 2024 rating: 32
Ned Long
44
The Pies thought enough of the former Hawk to include him in the final seven games of last season as they fought unsuccessfully to play finals. The mid-year draft pick was solid enough, with his best game coming against Sydney in round 22 (13 disposals, 69 ranking points and seven tackles). Needs to clean up his disposal efficiently. 2024 rating: N/A
Lachie Sullivan
44
Joined the first kick-first goal club when he debuted against Carlton, the first of 10 games after winning an SSP spot with the Magpies. Had to wait for a period after the season to be guaranteed a second season but will be working hard to find an opening. More a back-up midfielder than a regular starter, but could be a solid depth player. 2024 rating: N/A
Wil Parker
42
It took the small defender only five VFL games to convince the Pies’ coaching staff that he was ready to play at the top level. He ended up playing five AFL games, with his best effort coming against the Demons (100 ranking points and 17 disposals). Doesn’t get the ball a lot but is safe and rated highly for one-on-one work. 2024 rating: N/A
Jakob Ryan
41
Half-back/wingman who showed his intent to make up for an injury-hit 2024 by winning the first 2km time-trial in November. His one AFL game in 2023 was cut short by a concussion, and he battled calf and hand issues last year which saw him restricted to 12 VFL games. Needs to start making his mark now. 2024 rating: 40
Will Hayes
38
He might have been the third player picked of the Pies’ 2024 draftees, but the lightning quick, agile wingman has impressed in his first preseason in black and white. A strong performer at the Draft Combine, he has shown elusive qualities and footy smarts in some of the club’s match simulation sessions. Maybe a bolter for a debut at some stage. 2024 rating: N/A
Oscar Steene
35
After 18 VFL games in 2023, the 21-year-old ruckman was restricted to only one match last year, due to a toe injury which wrecked his season. There is no rush with him, with the Pies seeing him and Smit as long-term options. He will partner with Smit in the VFL throughout 2025, as they push to learn more from Cameron and Cox. 2024 rating: 35
Joel Cochran
34
Mobile intercepting defender who won’t be rushed but looks like a player of the future. Won the Combine 2km time trial in a time of 6:05, the fastest by eight seconds. He might not get a chance this year but has already impressed with his work ethic. Can play on talls/smalls. 2024 rating: N/A
Charlie West
34
The grandson of former AFL boss Wayne Jackson, West looks to have a good future as a contested marking forward standing at 194cm who also has the capacity to keep the ball alive when it hits the ground. Played two SANFL games for Woodville-West Torrens last year. Clocked 2.957 in the 20m National Combine sprint and also good in the vertical leap. 2024 rating: N/A
Ash Johnson
30
Key forward who has fallen out of favour after being delisted late last year before being granted a rookie spot. Has played 27 games for 36 goals (including 21 in 2023) but might have his papers stamped unless several of the big forwards are out injured. This really is his last chance in Pies’ colours and if he gets one, he needs to take it with both hands. 2024 rating: 55
Iliro Smit
28
There is a lot to like about this 200cm raw but improving ruckman who averaged 22 hitouts (including 55 in the final game against Richmond) in eight VFL games after being taken in the mid-season draft. He is not yet 20 and will be vying with Steene as the Pies’ next ruckman-in-waiting. But he will need to be patient as Cameron is going nowhere. 2024 rating: N/A
