serious allegations means that some naysayers out there would have already hung him out to dry irrespective of what the outcome may or may not be.

Being an AFL footballer or for that matter anyone in the public eye is already starting on the back foot.

Like anything of a serious nature in this example the case of an AFL footballer no matter how good suppressing one's name is it will be only a matter of time before it is disclosed through whatever channels and would be extremely prejudicial to the case.
